Distributed Team Management Model

Client Success Story

Learn how we helped a global freight company build a Distributed Team Management Model to manage distributed teams more effectively. Distributed Team Management skills and processes are crucial in a world where businesses must respond quickly and accurately. This project aimed to help the organization adopt a distributed team management model, focusing on people, processes, technology, and organization to boost productivity in the virtual environment. We partnered with key stakeholders to evaluate current practices and develop a comprehensive model tailored to the company's needs. Our approach addressed the unique challenges of managing distributed teams, ultimately enhancing productivity and efficiency.

Client

The client is a national distributor of quality controlled foodservice products with distribution facilities in 12 states.

Challenge

Create a core training program and best practice process for the organization’s sales management & operations teams focused on providing skills to help them manage a geographically dispersed group of 500 associates. The client was seeking to bring continuity to communications as well as provide a better platform to keep associates productive without having daily face to face contact.

Solution

The initial focus of this program was aimed at managers responsible for training, coaching, and reviewing daily work. The AMS team taught them techniques to better manage in a virtual team environment. This core training program helped managers gain competency beyond “basic” team management skill sets. They learned advanced performance management in a virtual environment, effective communication of objectives to a distributed workforce, and strategies for engaging with a distributed team. Additionally, they were trained in promoting engagement in a virtual environment using technology tools.

AMS's training program included interactive workshops, real-world scenarios, and role-playing exercises to ensure managers could apply these skills effectively. The program also provided managers with access to digital resources and ongoing support to reinforce their learning. By focusing on enhancing these critical skills, AMS empowered managers to lead their teams more effectively, resulting in improved productivity and morale across the organization.

As a result, the organization saw a significant improvement in team performance and collaboration, as well as increased employee satisfaction. The program not only met the immediate needs of the managers but also laid a strong foundation for continued success in managing distributed teams.

Benefits

As a result of the training, the organization realized a significant decrease in turnover and an increase in productivity, as measured by their internal performance standards. A sampling of clients and staff one year after the program revealed that the company reduced employee training costs by 5% and increased overall territory sales by 8% within the sales teams, according to the CEO. This initiative demonstrated the effectiveness of structured training programs for distributed team management. Further analysis showed that after establishing a clear structure for the distributed team initiative, there was a noticeable improvement in continuity compared to performing virtual work in an unorganized environment.

The structured approach provided team members with the necessary tools and guidance to work more efficiently and cohesively. This not only enhanced team performance but also contributed to a more stable and productive work environment. The positive outcomes underscored the importance of well-designed training programs in achieving organizational goals and driving long-term success.
