Biography
Merrill focuses her efforts on helping organizations strengthen how they manage, govern, and use data to create business value. She works across the full spectrum of data management capabilities, including data quality, metadata, governance structures, operating models, and business adoption. Her work helps companies establish clear ownership, improve confidence in their data, and build sustainable practices that enable better decisions, stronger compliance, and more effective performance across the enterprise.
Her passion for effective data management is matched by her commitment to making data governance practical, understandable, and sustainable for business and technology teams. Merrill helps teams clarify roles, define decision rights, improve data quality practices, and build the confidence needed to manage data long after an engagement is complete. She brings a clear, business-centered approach to complex data challenges, helping leaders connect data discipline to operational performance, regulatory responsibility, and enterprise decision-making.
Merrill is the author of Crimes Against Data: 101 true crime stories of people abusing and misusing data, published in 2023. The book uses real-world examples to help readers understand what can happen when data is mismanaged and why sound data practices matter. She is currently working on her second book, which explores the detail behind managing data properly and provides additional perspective on how organizations can build stronger data management capability.
Merrill has spent her career working in data across a wide range of industries. After nearly a decade with a Big 4 firm helping clients address data management needs, she established and led a data governance practice within a biopharma organization. She later worked for a consulting company where she led the data management practice, developed new service offerings, and delivered solutions for clients seeking to strengthen the way they manage and use data.
Across her work, Merrill emphasizes the importance of understanding business needs before designing data solutions. She believes organizations need the right data, used compliantly and managed with discipline, to make appropriate and timely decisions. Her approach combines deep technical knowledge with practical business judgment, enabling teams to move from fragmented or inconsistent data practices toward more trusted, repeatable, and value-producing ways of working.
Merrill holds a BMath from the University of Waterloo, with a major in Operations Research and a minor in Computer Science.
